Homecoming the Marriage Supper
by A.J. Wilson

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."”Acts 1:8

“After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands,” Revelation 7:9

“Then he said to me, "Write: 'Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!' " And he said to me, "These are the true sayings of God." Revelation 19:9

Homecoming brings to mind a great assembling of like-minded individuals to their home-place and reminiscing about their efforts together.  Many people have fond memories of Homecomings past: the meals, songs, fellowship, and members now gone.  This is an invitation to focus on a future homecoming, and what we should do today in preparation.

The future homecoming I am referring to is the “marriage supper of the Lamb” as referred to in Rev. 19:9.  Though there is a meal involved it will not be a gathering primarily of Southern Baptists from rural Kentucky, on the contrary there will be people “of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues.” Everyday that we receive of God should be one working to fulfill the Great Commission.  That is, we should work to be a witness from here to the ends of the earth, making disciples for Jesus Christ (paraphrasing from Math 28 and Acts 1.)

God tarries Jesus’ return today because there are seats at his grand supper which are yet empty because there are those who have not heard his gospel message.  There are those in remote regions where it is difficult to travel, some in countries where governments are hostile to the Christian gospel, and there are some even in our own “backyards” that no one has seen fit to share the gospel with.  This great “homecoming” still has much work to be done for it, and we are all part of the preparation.  The Acts 1:8 challenge, or commission, is not addressed to any subset of the Christian body, but to the whole body, individually.

There are many jobs to fill in order to meet this challenge.  We must each make the decision to join the team, and do the work.  We need workers, supporters, and prayer to accomplish the goal.  Ask yourself and pray: “What does God want me to do in preparation for His grand homecoming?”
