No More Babes in Christ
by A.J. Wilson

“And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able;” 1 Corinthians 3:1-2

“And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.” 2 Timothy 2:24-26

“of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.  For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food... . .Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,” Hebrews 5:11,12, 6:1 (passage 5:11-6:12)

We all have a calling from God to continue to learn more about him.  A memorable quote from the movie, “Fireproof” is when Michael tells Caleb to get a “degree” in his spouse, “first a bachelors, then keep going and get a masters, a doctorate, and then start again.”  This is a good piece of advice for our relationship with God also.

This week we are illustrating our Christian life with a line graph of our spiritual knowledge and a time line.  On one end of both graphs there is the time we received the gospel, and on the other end we have our transition into heaven (death) and fully knowing God at the end of the graph.  Our goal for our lives should always be moving toward God in knowledge.  The time line will never stop moving toward death, but the line on the graph doesn’t necessarily have to move.  Effort is required to move the line toward God.

We will never know our true level of maturity until we reach heaven, but God has told us all the ways that we can use to move the line.  Prayer is often our side of a conversation, but God often speaks from the Bible, or by bringing to mind certain scriptures.  So it is vital that we maintain regular Bible reading.  Then discuss with others through a small group, or by reading other’s thoughts to ensure that your interpretations are in-line with the Bible’s intent.

Saved        measured in time (years)             Death

Saved
measured by God (maturity)       Know God
