Strengthened in Flavor “You discipline a man with punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; every man is a mere vapor.” Psalms 39:11(Jer 8:13)
“And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:3-5 (also 2 Cor 12:10, James 1:3-4)
“that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,” 1 Peter 1:7
“I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” Revelation 3:18
A lot of fine sauces are referred to
as reduction sauces.
These sauces, such as a balsamic vinegar sauce,
or a white wine sauce, will take a good steak or salad to another level.
After preparing the meat, the excess grease is
poured off, and then a liquid (stock, wine, vinegar, soy sauce, etc) is
poured in to deglaze the pan (getting the stuff off the bottom of the pan.)
The liquid mixture is then allowed to cook for a
while, evaporating much of the liquid, leaving a thick and intense tasting
sauce.
(note: gravy is considered a reduction sauce.)
Many times we let things water down
our faith.
We use money, possessions, positions, hobbies, good
health, and other things to puff ourselves up and make us feel good.
While by themselves these things are not evil
and there is no problem having any of them, if they get in the way of your
relationship with God, it is time to put them away.
Sometimes though, God has to remove those extra
things to strengthen our faith for us.
Our earthly lives are often compared to a vapor
which will soon pass away, much like the liquid in the sauces mentioned
above.
God has allowed trials to come into our lives, in order
to strengthen our faith, and sometimes evaporate off the extras which so
easily distract us.
As Paul, James, and Peter all wrote,
tribulations build up many Christian attributes such as patience and
perseverance.
While we all understand that it is
terribly difficult to look at the good in the midst of a trial, take a look
at what the scriptures say will come as a result: “may be found to praise,
honor, and glory. . .of Jesus Christ”, and “white garments, that you may be
clothed” (remember what the saints are wearing at the judgement seat of
Christ.)
Be of good courage, and lean on your fellow brothers
and sisters, so we may all press toward the goal of Christ! |
