Take It With You

When we go on trips, everyone likes to pickup a souvenir to remember the trip.  In 2002, according to the census bureau, there were sales of over 775 million dollars attributed to souvenirs in the United States.  In general we like to “remember the good times.”  Do we as Christians do the same thing?

Have you ever been to a church service and left saying, “That was a great service!” and then a couple of hours later when trying to tell a friend, you can’t remember why?  We remember the good feelings we had, but have nothing left to hold on to, except feelings which quickly fade away.  I believe God knew we would be this way which is why He commanded the Israelites to build alters (like in Joshua above) and to study his word. 

A good illustration (thanks Bro. Dwayne) of taking something with you is found in 2 Kings Chapter 5, “the healing of Naaman.”  As you will remember, Naaman needed to be healed of leprosy and would have done anything to be healed.  He went to the man of God, washed in the Jordan, and was healed.  The experience itself would be enough to forever remember what had happened, but it wasn’t enough for Naaman.  In verse 17 he asks Elisha for two loads of earth that he could take with him.  The Lord had done something great for Naaman, and he wanted to take a piece of this place with him. 

What things have you taken home with you, to remember what the Lord has done for you? (No taking hymnals, pews, or a piece of carpet!)  The word of God was given to us that we can remember what the Lord did for Israel, and now for us.  The next time something great happens for you, try to tie that to a verse or passage of scripture.  Then the next time you come across that scripture you will remember.  Also when Satan tries to fight you, the scriptures will be available for you to combat him. (see Ephesians above)
